SuperNARI Kalpana Saroj
✨ Kalpana Saroj: From Child Bride to Industrial Powerhouse
Born in 1961 in the village of Roperkheda in Maharashtra, Kalpana Saroj grew up in a Dalit family - one of India’s most oppressed castes. Her father, a police constable, supported her education, but society had different plans. At just 12 years old, Kalpana was married off and moved to a slum in Mumbai with her husband’s family. What followed was a life of physical and emotional abuse, isolation, and hardship.
Within six months, her father brought her back home - but the scars of her failed marriage left her emotionally shattered. In a village that shamed her and a world that silenced women like her, Kalpana tried to end her life by drinking poison. She survived. And from that point on, she decided: if she was going to live, she would live with purpose.
🪡 Starting Over: Mumbai and the First Hustle
At 16, Kalpana returned to Mumbai - not as a wife, but as a worker. She got a job in a garment factory, earning meager wages, but it gave her independence. She heard about government loans for Scheduled Castes and used one to start her tailoring business. That turned into a furniture business, and slowly, she began to understand how to operate, invest, and grow.
She was never formally trained in business. Her training came from hardship - learning to negotiate with vendors, handle customers, and save whatever she could.
🏙️ Real Estate and the Big Leap
Her big break came when she invested in a disputed real estate property that no one else wanted. She used legal resources, cleared the disputes, and partnered with a builder to develop it. Though she took a smaller share of the profit, it was a life-changing decision - and it gave her confidence to take on bigger risks.
She began helping others through an NGO she started, educating women on government aid schemes and encouraging entrepreneurship in slums and rural areas.
🏭 The Kamani Tubes Miracle
In 2001, a massive opportunity came - but it looked like a disaster to most. Kamani Tubes Ltd, once a major company, had collapsed. It was bankrupt, over ₹116 crore in debt, and caught in over 100 legal cases. Employees were unpaid and desperate.
Kalpana took over. Everyone doubted her - she had no engineering background, no corporate network. But she had two things most people didn’t: guts and credibility.
She built a legal and financial team, negotiated with banks, and slowly paid off debts. In just three months, she cleared workers’ dues. Over time, she revived the business, restored operations, and brought Kamani Tubes back to life.
